Who you will meet

The Department Heads

Four people who have run their part of the house for years, and who still work the floor. Geneviève is in the lobby most mornings, Julien is at the hearth most nights, Amara still takes two clients a day, and Clara is on site for every wedding she books.

Geneviève Marchand, General Manager of Praivelle House in Kansas City

General Manager

Geneviève Marchand, CHA

Geneviève grew up in Lyon, in a family that ran a twenty-two-seat bistro below their apartment. She learned hospitality the old way — setting tables before school, learning which regular took their coffee black, and understanding that a restaurant is judged in the first ninety seconds. After hotel school in Lausanne she spent eleven years opening properties for other people, and by 2007 she had a notebook of everything she would never do if the house were hers.

In 2008 she and her husband Michael bought a tired 1940s farmhouse on twelve acres of prairie south of the Plaza, with a leaking roof, three good oak trees and a view that sold it on the spot. The plan was a six-room inn. The plan lasted about a year. Eighteen years later Praivelle House is twelve suites, a spa, a dining room and a cellar bar, and Geneviève still walks the corridors at half past six every morning with a coffee in one hand and a maintenance list in the other.

Julien Baptiste, Executive Chef at The Dining Room at Praivelle House

Executive Chef

Julien Baptiste

Julien came to Kansas City by way of Marseille, Copenhagen and a two-year stretch in Chicago, and he will tell you the move to Missouri was the best decision of his career. What he found here was a farming belt he had not expected: heirloom tomatoes with actual flavour, heritage pork raised forty minutes away, and a growing community of growers who would take a chef seriously if the chef showed up in person.

The Dining Room at Praivelle House is built around a single wood-fired hearth, and almost nothing leaves the kitchen without touching it. Vegetables are charred whole and dressed simply. Fish is cooked over embers until the skin blisters. The menu changes four or five times a year rather than four or five times a week, because Julien would rather perfect a dish than chase novelty — though the kitchen does run a nightly market plate built entirely from whatever arrived that morning.

Amara Osei, Spa and Wellness Director at The Spa at Praivelle House

Spa & Wellness Director

Amara Osei, LMT

Amara trained as a physical therapist before she ever touched a massage table, and it shows in the way she assesses a guest. Where most spa menus start with a list of oils, hers starts with a conversation about sleep, desk posture, running mileage and the shoulder that has been complaining since a bad hotel mattress three cities ago. She treats the spa as a clinical space that happens to be beautiful, not the other way around.

She joined Praivelle House in 2014 when the spa was a converted potting shed with two rooms and one very good soaking tub. She wrote the original treatment menu, trained the first four therapists, and has been the reason the house now holds a licensed treatment team of eleven across five rooms, a sauna, a steam room and a private couples suite. Her signature ninety-minute Prairie Reset is the most requested booking in the building.

Responsibilities

  • Deep tissue and sports therapy
  • Pre-natal and couples treatments
  • Sleep and stress programmes
  • Therapist training

Clara Whitfield, Director of Weddings and Events at Praivelle House

Director of Weddings & Events

Clara Whitfield, CMP

Clara planned her first wedding at twenty-three for a cousin, on a budget of four hundred dollars and a borrowed tent, and discovered within about an hour that she was built for the work. She spent the next nine years with a Kansas City event firm running everything from two-hundred-guest galas to a corporate launch on a rooftop in a thunderstorm, and learned the part of the job nobody advertises: the calm, unglamorous logistics that decide whether a day feels effortless.

She came to Praivelle House in 2016 and has since run more than four hundred weddings and private events on the property, from twelve-guest elopements in the orchard to a full-tent reception for two hundred and forty on the south lawn. She keeps a laminated rain plan in the office that has been executed eleven times, and she has never once had to move a ceremony indoors without a solution already in place.

Responsibilities

How we hire

Temperament First, Skill Second

Every hire at Praivelle House starts the same way. Before anyone talks about a résumé, we ask a simple question: tell us about a time you looked after someone. It does not have to be a guest and it does not have to be a hotel.

You can teach almost anyone to work a front desk, mix a drink or make a bed to a standard. What you cannot teach, or at least what we have never learned how to teach, is the instinct to notice.

The culture

A Small House Means Everyone Sees Everything

There is a particular kind of person who thrives in a twelve-suite house and a particular kind who does not. The one who thrives is someone who likes knowing what is going on across the whole building.

That has an upside and a cost. The upside is that the work is varied and the days go quickly and you learn the whole of a hotel rather than one slice of it.

  • Above-average pay for Kansas City hospitality roles
  • Rota posted a month in advance, with no close-then-open shifts
  • Two full shutdowns a year, in January and July, for the whole team
  • Staff eat the same food as guests, at a table, sitting down

The Team, Measured

A few numbers that tell you more about the house than any award.

  • 62 People on the payroll across four departments
  • 5 yrs Average length of service
  • 9 Cooks in the kitchen brigade, all trained on the hearth
  • 11 Licensed therapists and spa staff

A day in the house

What the Team Actually Does All Day

A house like this runs on a rhythm that most guests never see. It starts at half past five, when the overnight porter finishes the last of the night shift and the first baker comes in to start the bread.

Breakfast service runs from seven. Housekeeping starts stripping rooms at nine and works against a board that tells them who is arriving, who is staying and who has asked for a late check-out.

Good to know

Questions About the Team

What guests and candidates most often want to know.

Will I actually meet the people described on this page?

Usually, yes. Geneviève is in the lobby most mornings, Julien runs the pass most nights, Amara takes two clients a day and Clara is on site for every event she books.

How big is the team?

Sixty-two people across four departments — front of house, kitchen and dining, spa and wellness, and events. It is a small enough team that most people know most people, which is exactly how we like it.

How long do people stay?

The average length of service is five years, which is a long time in hospitality. More than half the team has been here five years or longer, and two people who started as summer staff now run departments.

Are you hiring, and how do I apply?

We post openings on our careers page and keep a standing list of good people for when roles come up. Send a short note and a résumé to stay@praivellehouse. com, and tell us about a time you looked after someone.

Do you offer training and progression?

Yes, and it is deliberate rather than incidental. Cooks train on the hearth with Julien personally. Front desk staff are cross-trained on reservations and events. We have sent people on sommelier courses and paid for spa therapy qualifications.

What is it like to work here day to day?

Varied, and close to the guests. In a house this size everyone sees everything, which means nobody gets to say that is not my job. It suits people who like the whole picture and find a big corporate property impersonal.
